Have a nice day was an accident that turned into a video work when a breeze blew a plastic bag against the wall of the bodega I frequent back home in the city I grew up in. The food systems that I relied on as a kid always felt fragile and precarious. Growing up in a food desert, the bodega was a joyous place for me with its bright colors and loud bachata music that was always playing out into the street. The bodega was also the only place within walking distance of my family’s apartment that sold “real” food like canned soups and beans, boxed mac n’ cheese,and milk (but that was too expensive most of the time).
